Tips and Ideas for Creating the Perfect Morning Routine for You (2023)

Hello friends, I don’t know about you but I do like a routine, especially a good morning routine that sets me up for the day ahead.

Prior to the pandemic when I commuted to work each day, I had a morning routine.  Now that’s not to say it was perfect or that I was perfect but I did have a routine.  I read a book called, Miracle Morning – 6 habits that will transform your life before 8 AM and tried to take the advice from the book.  When I look back now, I’m actually astounded at how much I packed into my mornings prior to arriving at work at 7.45 and yet since the pandemic and the arrival of home working, that routine went completely out of the window and despite the fact that I no longer have that morning commute of 40 minutes, I have found it far less enticing to put a routine into place, whereas previously, before 7.15 AM, I had prepared my lunch and snacks for the day, practiced yoga or another form of exercise, meditated, journaled and felt like I had really set myself up for a good day ahead.

I know mornings can be tough, but starting your day off with a consistent morning routine can set the tone for the rest of your day.

So what is a morning routine?

Basically, it is a series of habits or activities that you do every morning to start your day off on the right foot. It can be as simple as making your bed, or as elaborate as meditating, exercising, or writing a journal.  The key is to find what works for you and make it a consistent part of your morning routine.

There are many benefits to establishing a morning routine.  It can help you feel more organised and in control of your day, reduce decision fatigue and increase productivity and motivation.  A morning routine is also an opportunity to take care of yourself and do the things that nourish your mind, body, and soul.

So, how do you create a morning routine that works for you?

First, think about your goals. Do you want to feel more energised and focused? Do you want to have time to yourself be the craziness of the day starts? Once you know your goals, you can start thinking and experimenting with different activities until you find a combination that works for you.

Remember, a morning routine is all about finding what works for you.  Try new things and make changes if something isn’t working for you.  The most important thing is that you start your day feeling good about yourself and ready to tackle whatever comes your way.

After the festive period away from work, I thought I would try to put into place a new morning routine for myself.  I know I am guilty of sitting at my computer all day with little thought to moving, so have adjusted my work start time to allow me to have a walk prior to starting work.

Two things to reference for you here are:

1.       The book Atomic Habits by James Clear – read my book review here.  James talks about the importance of attaching new habits to routines that already exist – for me that has meant that the time I would have spent commuting has now become my walk time.

2.     Dr Andrew Huberman podcast on YouTube - How to Feel Energized and Sleep Better With One Morning Activity | Dr. Andrew Huberman - YouTube . Dr Huberman talks of the importance of getting some natural light into your eyes as quickly as possible after waking up to optimise the way you feel and to help regulate sleep patterns.

I hope this blog inspires you to create a morning routine that sets you up for a productive and nourishing day – I would love to hear what your morning routine is, so why not leave me a comment?
